Biography & Genealogy: | James McDowell Carrington, Class of 1864MS: Born- Sep. 11, 1838. Matriculated from University, Va. At VMI 6 weeks. Military Record: In student Co. "Sons of Liberty", Capt J. T. Tosh's '60 Co. at UVA. Unofficial source says served in 1861 on staff of his uncle by marriage, Brigadier General J. B. Floyd. Raised and on March 15, 1862, elected Capt. of Capt. J. M. Carrington's Co., Va. Light Artillery (Charlottesville Artillery, Co. E, 31st Va. Artillery Battalion). Captured May 12, 1864, at Spotsylvania, Va. Held at Ft. Delaware, De., until sent to Hilton Head Island, SC, on Aug. 20, 1864, as one of the "Immortal 600". Took oath and released at Ft. Delaware, De., on June 9, 1865. Post War Career: Lawyer. At UVA 1856-1861, and 1865-1866. Brother of Carrington, EC '44. Died- May 2, 1911, and buried in President Church Cemetery, Washington, D.C. |
