|Biography & Genealogy:||John Carlyle Herbert Bryant, Class of 1864MS. Born- 1843 in Lexington. Matriculated from Georgetown, DC. At VMI 6 weeks. Military Record: Applicant for US Military Academy. Enlisted 17 April 1861 at Alexandria as Pvt, Company A, 17th Virginia. Applied 18 May 1861 for cadetship. Appointed 2nd Lt, Provisional Army of Virginia. Discharged 5 June 1861 to go to VMI. Rejoined Company A, 17th Virginia 1 September 1861 as Pvt. Appointed Adjutant at re-organization of regiment 29 April 1862. Acting Adjutant for Brig Gen (later Lt Gen) A.P. Hill May 1862. Made 1st Lt (probably Reserve Army, Confederate States), Assistant Adjutant General, on staff of Col (later Brig Gen) M.D. Corse, commanding brigade. Wounded in action and captured at Antietam. Exchanged 21 October 1862. Aide-de-Camp to Corse 14 November 1862; Acting Assistant and Inspector General October 1863. Made Capt, Reserve Army Confederate States, Assistant Adjutant General, Lt Gen J. Longstreet's staff 2 November 1863. Back on Corse's staff 1864. Capt and Inspector General on staff of Brig Gen W.R. Terry (VMI Class of 1850) in 1865. Slightly wounded in action (in the left foot) and captured at Sayler's Creek 6 April 1865. On US hospital ship State of Maine and in DC Hospital. Released on oath 9 June 1865. Post War Career: Merchant, Fertilizer Business. Lived in Alexandria. Died- 11 April 1914.|
