|Biography & Genealogy:||David Meade Bernard Jr., Class of 1864 MS. Some records show name as "Burnard"; DOB 11 May. Born- 11 April 1840 in Petersburg. Matriculated from Orange County Courthouse. At VMI for 3 weeks. At Hampden-Sydney College 1857-1860. Military Records: Enlisted 6 August 1861 at Petersburg for one year as a Pvt, Company E, 12th Virginia. Made Cpl in May of 1862, made Sgt on 14 July 1862. Absent sick October 1862. Transferred 25 February 1864 as Pvt to Company E, 13th Virginia Cavalry. Absent sick april 1864. Returned to 12th Virginia on 2 December 1864. Transferred to Company E, 10th Virginia Cavalry on 2 February 1865. Made Sgt. Severely wounded in action (in the thigh) on 1 April 1865 at Five Forks (some records show 31 March at Hatcher's Run or 3 April at Gilliam's Farm). To hospital in Richmond on 4 April 1865. Paroled 17 May 1865. Post War Career: Teacher, Lawyer. Commonwealth's Attorney 1870. Married Lutie B. Morrison in 1870. Lost election to the state legislature. Elected judge, Husting's Court, Petersburg 1885. Served until 1894. Espicopalian. Died- 3 August 1894 in Petersburg.|
