Paternal grandparents- Edward Carter of Albemarle Co., and Mary Lewis (daughter of Col. Charles Lewis who served in the Revolutionary War). Maternal grandparents- James Powell Cocke (Capt., Revolutionary War), and Lucy Smith (of Chesterfield, Co., VA). Charles E. Carter never married. VMI record: non-graduate; he entered VMI on November 11, 1839 from Albemarle Co., VA and resigned on July 1, 1840 because of academic deficiencies. Military record: Served in the Mexican War as a Private in the Palmetto Regiment (South Carolina). Career: planter in South Carolina; soldier. Died of fever while on military duty in Mexico, November 5, 1847; buried Columbia, SC.
