Biography & Genealogy: | Fleming Grantland DuBignon, Class of 1871: Genealogy: Born- At the home of his Mat. Grandfather Seatland Grantland on July 25, 1852. (Some sources say 1853. He was 14 when he entered VMI in Sept. of 1866.) Father- Col. Charles duBignon; Mother- Ann Grantland. Pat. Grandfather- Christopher P. duBignon; Pat. Grandmother- Amele DuBignon (maiden name unknown. Mat. Grandfather- Seaton Grantland; Mat. Grandmother- Ann V. Grantland (maiden name unknown). Married- Caro Nicol Lamar, daughter of Col. A.L. Lamar. Children- 1- Caro L. duBignon, who became Mrs. Robert Alston; 2- Anne Grantland duBignon; 3- Charles duBignon; 4- Mary Lamar duBignon, who became Mrs. W. C. A. Henry. VMI Record: Entered VMI- Sept. 11, 1866; Had to repeat his 4th Classman (Freshman) year; dismissed Oct. 5, 1870 while in the hospital sick; Board of Visitors declined his request to be reinstated Nov. 25, 1870. Took a law course at the University of Va. after leaving VMI Careers: Member of Georgia Legislature for four years; President of Senate; on General Council for Southern Express Co.; Member of the firm of Chisholm, Erwin and duBignon. Died- March 18, 1909. Brother of Seaton DuBignon, Class of 1871; cousin of Seaton Grantland, Class of 1871. Fleming DuBignon is shown at left in this photo, along with classmate Joseph M. Jayne. |
