|Biography & Genealogy:||John Duncan Freeland, Class of 1865: Born- May 20, 1843 in New Orleans, LA Father- John Freeland; Mother- Rosalie Tucker Bradfute. No information on grandparents. Married- Mary Witherspoon Goldthwaite of Mobile, ALA, and daughter of Henry Goldthwaite and Eliza Witherspoon. Children- Dr. John Freeland. Entered VMI- Jan 3, 1862; Dismissed Nov. 25, 1862 for collecting missiles in his room to throw at officers after dark. Civil War Service- Became volunteer aide-de-camp for Brig. Gen. H.T. Hays in late 1862; Badly injured at Gettysburg when his horse was killed and then fell on him leavinghim unfit for field duty. Appointed 2nd Lieut. and assigned as Drill Master to Virginia Reserve Forces on Aug. 1, 1864. Paroled at Appomattox in 1865. Career- Tobacconist. Died- May 18, 1872 in Richmond, Va.|
