Biography & Genealogy: | Frederick Warner Sheetz, Class of 1864: Born- May 27, 1839. Matriculated from Hampshire County, Va. At VMI 7 months. Military Record: Enlisted at Romney (West Virginia) May 18, 1861 for 1 year as Private, Company K, 13th Va. To 4th Corporal August 30, 1861. In hospital October 15-November 26, 1861; April 20-May 9, 1862 (latter in Charlottesville with bronchitis). Entry in records of 7th Virginia Cavalry (roll February 28-July 1, 1862) shows him as Private, Company F of that regiment with notation that he enlisted at Berryville March 8 but was serving with 13th Virginia. (Commander of Co F, 7th Virginia Cavalry was G.F. Sheetz, probably a relative, and F.W. Sheetz may have served briefly with unit while on furlough.) Wounded in action at Cedar Mountain August 8, 1862. Returned to unit January 1863 but unfit for duty. Detailed as postmaster for division and later for II Corps, Army of Northern Virginia. Paroled at New Creek, West Virginia April 22, 1865. Post War Career: Dairyman, fruit grower. Lived in Keyser, West Virginia. Died- Winston-Salem, North Carolina March 8, 1906. |
