|Biography & Genealogy:||James Robert Scales, Class of 1864 Born- Aug. 23, 1843 (some sources say 1843) Father- Absalom Scales; Mother- Eliza Carter. No information on grandparents. Never married, no children Entered VMI- July 21, 1861; Served as Drill Master for the Corps of Cadets when VMI closed down at the outbreak of the Civil War; Marched with the Corps to Richmond under the command of then Maj. Thomas (Stonewall) Jackson in Spring of 1861; Resigned in early 1862 to join the C.S.A.; Made Honorary Graduate of the Class of 1864 ca. 1865. Civil War Service- (for pre-enlistment service, see above paragraph) Joined as Private in Co. H of the 54th Va. Regt. in early 1862. Elected 1st Lieut. May 13, 1862; made Acting Adjutant in fall of 1863; made Captain Jan. 1, 1864; Resigned due to illness July 10, 1864; Records show him at division hospital still in Aug. 1864- no further records found. Died- Nov. 9, 1866 from effects of disease contracted during service (deterioration of the lungs, probably caused by an attack of tuberculosis)|
