|Biography & Genealogy:||Joseph Henry Scales, Class of 1864. Born- ca. 1841 in Penn's Store, Patrick Co. Va. Father- Absalom Scales; Mother- Eliza Carter. No information on grandparents. He was married twice, but the names of his wives are unknown. Children- Dixie May Scales Gibson, who married James L. Gibson of Yuma, AZ; and Hugh Scales. Dixie May was a child of Scales's 2nd marriage. We have no information on which marriage Hugh was from, or if he was older or younger than his sister. Entered VMI- Sept. 17, 1860; Granted indefinite leave of absence, July 2, 1861,but never returned to the Institute. Civil War Service- Enlisted Sept. 16, 1861 at Christiansburg, Va. as Private in Co. H of the 54th Va. Regt. Promoted to Adjutant Oct. 20, 1861; Elected Captain May 13, 1862. Resigned from service Sept. 30, 1863 because desertion had left him almost without a command and in his words "a question of rank does me injustice". Unofficial source says he later served with the Va. Reserve Forces. Post War Career- Dentist in Black Rock, Ark. Died- ca. 1900 in Black Rock Ark.|
