Biography & Genealogy: | Cyrus Milton Parkins, Class of 1864: Born- Oct. 6, 1841 in Frederick Co. Va. Father- Alfred Parkins of Frederick Co. Va.; Mother- Eliza Hollingsworth of Frederick Co. Va. Pat. Grandfather- Joseph Parkins. No information on other grandparents. Married- Julia A. VanFossen of Augusta Co. Va. Daughter- Mattie B. Parkins. Enlisted in C.S.A. Served as Private in Co. A 1st Va. Cav. and Courier. Carried Thomas J. Jackson's commission as Brig. Gen. to him. Entered VMI Jan. 11, 1862 as 3rd Classman (Sophomore) but went AWOL July 8, 1862 (Probably to rejoin the C.S.A). The rest of his war record is sketchy and speculative. There was a M.C. Parker hired as a courier by the Winchester QuarterMaster Dept. who may actually have been Mr. Parkins. There was also a C.M. Parkins who enlisted July 1, 1863 at Greenbrier as Private in Co. G. 17th Va. Cav. Extant rolls show him detailed to the Quarter Master. Last extant roll Dec 31, 1864 shows him absent on sick leave. He was paroled at Winchester April 1865. Post War Career- Farmer. Died- April 26, 1922. |
