Grandfather- Thomas Anderson Morton; Pat. Grandmother- Martha Lockett. Mat. Grandfather- Tignal Jones; Mat. Grandmother- Patty Anderson. Married- Susanna Davis, daughter of Hugh Davis on Jan. 10. 1865. Children- 1- Hattie Davis Morton; 2- Hugh Tignal Morton. VMI Record: Entered VMI- Aug. 25, 1860; Resigned May 3, 1862 to join the Confederate Army. Civil War Record: Served as Drill Master for VMI Corps of Cadets stationed in Richmond, spring of 1861; Drill Master with the 26th NC Infantry Sept. 25- Nov. 23, 1861; Elected Capt. of Co. B, 56th Va. Infantry May 3, 1862; Wounded in action at Frayser's Farm; Dropped Jan. 9, 1863 for prolonged absence without leave; Commanded conscripts at Petersburg Feb, 1863; Transferred to Mississippi and seems to have briefly served as Col. of 53rd Tenn. Infantry; At Augusta, Ga. in Aug. 1863 when he applied to be Col. of a new regiment; records of late 1863- early 1864 show him as Col. of 56th Va. Infantry on detached service with Conscript Bureau at Columbus, Miss.; May have served with 1st Confederate States Cavalry; Found permanently unfit for duty by Board of Surgeons in Oct. 1864 because of the wound he received at Frayser's Farm (wound on left side of left thigh), but on list of POW's surrendered at Citronelle, AL May 4, 1865. Careers: Farmer. Died- Died ca. 1871 in Richmond from effects of his war wound.|
