Biography & Genealogy: | William Wallace McKaig Jr., Class of 1864: Born- May 5, 1842. Matriculated from Cumberland, Maryland. At VMI 15 months over 2 years (repeated 4th class year). Military Record: Drill Master, Richmond spring 1861. "Fought unattached" at First Manassas. Elected 3rd Lieutenant, Company I, 1st Virginia Septembber 14, 1861. To 2nd Lieutenant. Unofficial source says served as Adjutant of regiment. Dropped April 22, 1862. Unofficial source says served as a Captain in 12th Virginia Cavalry. No official record of such service found. In 1863 joined Company A, 2nd Maryland Cavalry Battalion (Col H.W. Gilmor's Battalion). 1st Lieutenant. Captured March 23, 1864 in Hampshire County (West Virginia). Held at Camp Chase, Ohio. Paroled February 25, 1865. Signed final parole at Winchester April 21, 1865. Post War Career: Colonel, Maryland National Guard. Iron manufacturer. Died- Murdered October 17, 1870. |
