Biography & Genealogy: | Henry Neil Martin, Class of 1864: Born- October 10, 1844. Matriculated from Jackson, Mississippi. At VMI 8 months. Military Record: Left on guard at VMI April 1861. Resigned from VMI April 22, 1861. Entered service May 12, 1862 and appointed Adjutant, 38th Mississippi Cavalry. Absent sick June-July 1862. Resigned for physical disability October 31, 1862. Seems to have served for several months as Volunteer Aide-de-camp to Maj Gen E. Van Dorn. Appointed 1st Lieutenent, Artillery April 23, 1863 (date of rank December 30, 1862). Assigned to staff of Brig Gen (later Lt Gen) S.D. Lee as Aide-de-camp. Seems to have been Lee's ordnance officer. Slightly Wounded in action May 22, 1863 during siege of Vicksburg. Captured there July 4, 1863. Praised by Lee for "distinguished gallantry" during campaign and siege of Vicksburg. Exchanged. To Capt, Assistant Adjutant General on Lee's staff August 3, 1863. After Lee transferred served in same capacity on staff of Brig Gen W. Adams, who was also his guardian. Paroled at Jackson, Mississippi May 12, 1865. Post war Career: Representative. Cotton factor, lawyer. Died- July 10, 1890. |
