Biography & Genealogy: | Charles James Lewis, Class of 1864: Born- April 12, 1843. Matriculated from Nashville, Tn. At VMI 6 months (entered as 5th year freshman). Military Record: Unofficial sources say Drill Master with troops in East Tennessee in 1861. Entered service spring 1862 as 2nd Lt, Company I, 2nd Mississippi Battalion (unit merged into 48th Ms). Some resources say not promoted to 2nd Lt until September 17, 1862. Unofficial source says slightly Wounded in Action at Antietam and Chancellorsville. Often sick 1862-63. In hospital (syphilis) November 1863-February 1864. Seriously Wounded in Action (legs broken) May 12, 1864 at Spotsylvania. Tendered resignation February 6, 1865. Disapproved. Paroled at Appomattox. Post War Career: Lived in Mississippi and New Orleans, La. Cotton planter; cotton business; real estate; insurance; harbor master. Died- June 26, 1905 in Hammond, La. |
