VMI Record: Entered VMI- Aug. 29, 1860; Suspended Jan. 27, 1862 for dueling charge, the first blemish on his record; Dismissed Feb. 14, 1862 after his duel case was referred to the Superintendent. Military Record: Left on guard at VMI when the Corps of Cadets were stationed in Richmond in Apr. 1861; Enlised Sept. 1, 1862 at Montgomery Co. as Private in Co. F, 25th Va. Cavalry; His horse was valued at $175; Appointed 1st Lieut. Sept. 15, 1862; Promoted to Capt. Aug. 1, 1863; Listed as "present under arrest" on most extant rolls after April 1864.
