VMI Record: Entered VMI- July 31, 1860; Granted leave of absence July 2, 1861, but did not return. Civil War Record: On guard duty at VMI while the Corps of Cadets was stationed in Richmond in April, 1861; Served as Drill Master with Brig. Gen. Henry A. Wise's legion; made 1st Lieut. of Co. E. 59th Va. Regiment; Very sick with camp fever in 1862, but rejoined army for the Seven Days' Battle; Joined Co. I of 2nd Kentucky Cavalry Oct. 20, 1862; Promoted to Sergeant; Captured at Buffington's Island, OH July 14, 1863; On list of POW's escaped from Camp Chase Oct. 9, 1863; Appointed Cadet from 6th Congressional District of Va. Feb. 19, 1864; Badly wounded in action (injuring pelvis) and captured ar Mt. Sterling, Ky. Jun 9, 1864; In hospital in Lexingtonm Ky. until sent back to Camp Chase, Oh.
