VMI Record/Education: Entered VMI- Aug. 26, 1869; at time of matriculation his family resided in Staunton, VA. Dropped from rolls- Feb. 15, 1872 for continued absenses. In 1876 studied law at Washington College (now Washington & Lee University) and admitted to bar, but did not practice.
