Grandmother- Margaret Stirling. Mat. Grandfather- Francis Thornton; Mat. Grandmother- Sally Innis. Never married, no children. Matriculated to VMI from Falmouth, VA. At VMI 4 months, having entered as a 3d classman (sophomore). Military Record: Enlisted at Fredericksburg on March 13, 1862 for war as a Private, Company M, 55th Virginia (Company F, 5th Alabama Battalion to June 10, 1862); transferred on May 1, 1862 to Company A, 9th Virginia Cavalry; appointed regimental Assistant Quartermaster on Oct. 24, 1862; on staff of Major General (later Lieutenant General) A.P. Hill and apparently served as Aide-de-Camp to Lieutenant General T.J. "Stonewall" Jackson when he was Mortally Wounded in Action on May 2, 1863 at Chancellorsville by the same volley that struck down Jackson.
