Biography & Genealogy:	James Pitman Carter, Class of 1864: Born- Aug. 6, 1842. Matriculated from Stephens, Va. At VMI 3 months. Military Record: Enlisted as Private, Co. H, 13th Va., 1861. Discharged Dec. 17, 1861, to go to VMI. On May 7, 1862, wrote to the Secretary of War asking to be appointed officer in Signal Corps. Resigned from VMI and on Nov. 1, 1862, at Berryville, Va., enlisted as Private, Co. A, 7th Va. Cavalry. AWOL early 1864. Killed in Action in Spotsylvania Co., Va. Brother of Carter, BM '68. Died- May 5, 1864.
