Biography & Genealogy: | Elisha Betts, Class of 1864. Name "Elijah" on some records. Born- 17 December 1842. Matriculated from Black Walnut. At VMI 1 year. Military Record: Drillmaster, 35th North Carolina from 1 January to 25 February 1862. Fearing his unit would not see active service, he resigned at Whitlock on 17 March 1862 and enlisted in Company E, 23rd Virginia. Elected Orderly Sgt on 28 July 1862. Wounded in action (in the hip) at "Sedar Creek" (Cedar Creek or Cedar Mountain) on 8 August 1862. Absent wounded until late 1862. Unable to march owing to wound and enlisted on 10 January in King William Company as Pvt, Company C, 3rd Virginia Cavalry. AWOL July-August 1863. Cpl on 10 September 1863 roll. Captured at Front Royal on 16 August 1864 en route to join Lt Gen J.A. Early's Army. He was held in Elmira, NY. Paroled 14 March 1865 and sent to the James River for exchange. Baptist. Post War Career: Farmer. Died- 6 February 1911. |
