Biography & Genealogy:James Battle, Class of 1864: Born- unknown Matriculated from Mobile, AL. At VMI 5 months. Military Record: Seems to have served for a few months in Company E, 3rd Alabama (his records may be confused with those of others with the same name). Appointed 1st Lt and Aide-de-Camp on 18 November 1862 on the staff of Brig Gen J.E. Slaughter(class of 1848) at Slaughter's request. He was with Slaughter in Eastern Subdistrict of Texas and Districts of Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. Captured 19 September 1864 near Bruinsburg, Louisiana. Held at Ft. Lafayette, New York. Released 12 June 1865. Post War Career: Reported to have spent all of his inheritance soon after the war. Died- In year 1880. Killed in a railroad accident in Sherman, Texas.
