Biography & Genealogy: | Armistead Barksdale Jr., Class of 1864: Born- 7 March 1841. Matriculated from Meadsville. At VMI 3 and a 1/2 months. At UVA 1859-60. Military Record: Enlisted 29 April 1861 in Company H, 14th Virginia. To Cpl. To Company E (sometimes Company H), 59th Virginia. Discharged 14 January 1862 to enter VMI. Enlisted 6 May 1862 in Richmond for war in Capt N. Penick's Company, Virginia Light Artillery (Capt J.W. Lewis's Company). Elected 2nd Lt 9 June 1862. Severly wounded in action (in the shoulder) 3 May 1863 at Salem Church. Among those commended by Brg Gen (later Maj Gen) C. Wilcox for "intelligence and valor." In hospital in Richmond and Danville. Paroled at Appomattox (allowed to keep horse). Post War Career: Teacher; Lawyer; Public Official. Justice of the peace. Died- 7 April 1935 in Halifax. |
