Biography & Genealogy: | John Alexander Davis, Class of 1867. New Market Cadet. Born- Aug. 15, 1846 in Bedford, Co. Va. Father- Dr. William Davis. Mother- Mary G. Alexander. No information on grandparents. Never married, no children. Entered VMI- April 4, 1864; Served as a Private in Co. A of the Corps of Cadets during the Battle of New Market; he resigned from VMI at the end of 1864 to join Capt. Dyke's Battery in Tallahassee, FL, but was made an Honorary Graduate of the Class of 1867 for his Civil War Service, and participation in the Battle of New Market. Career- Farmer; Bookkeeper; Captain of the Lynchburg Artillery Blues. He was struck with Epilepsy ca. 1900 (possibly earlier) and spent the rest of his life in institutions or medical colonies as an invalid. Died- July 17, 1912; Spring Hill Cemetery, Lynchburg, VA; Section U, Lot 100, Space 3; no marker exists*. According to the records at the cemetery, he was buried on July 17, 1912 at the age of 66 in a space owned by W. A. Franklin and W. A. Moss. *Marker restored in 2019. |
