Grandfather-Stephen Haywood; Mat. Grandmother- Delia Hawkins. Married- On Dec. 23, 1874 to Hannah More Scott, daughter of Edward Chambers Scott and Marinda Frances More. Children- 1- Edward Chambers Sasser; 2- John William Sasser; 3- William Henry Sasser; 4- Philemon Hawkins Sasser; 5- Lucinda Haywood Sasser; 6- Ben More Sasser. VMI Record: Entered VMI- Oct. 29, 1859; Left after one year. Attended University of North Carolina 1858-59. Military Record: Enlisted May 8, 1861 at Raleigh, NC in as 1st Sgt. in Co. A, 1st NC Artillery (10th State Troops); transferred to Co. I, 2nd NC Cavalry (19th State Troops) on Feb. 1, 1862 as 2nd Lieut.; resigned at an unknown date (probably May 1862); appointed 2nd Lieut. Co. A, 33rd NC Regiment on July 3, 1863; on sick leave or AWOL in late 1864; promoted to 1st Lieut. on Feb. 14, 1865; wounded in action in the neck early in 1865 at an unknown place; in hospital in Richmond, Va. and then Raleigh, NC; at "Camp Direction" in Greensboro, NC when paroled at an unspecified date. Careers: Farmer. Died- Dec. 6, 1882 in Wake Co. NC. (Cancer of the stomach).

The database currently includes the names of all enrolled students (both graduates and non-graduates) from VMI's opening in 1839 through the World War II era. In addition, you will find biographical and genealogical information, including a summary of military service during the Civil War, for many individuals who attended in the 19th century. The database also includes some historical Faculty and Board of Visitors members, as well as U. S. Army students sent to VMI for training during World Wars I and II.
