Paris, France May 5, 1796; d. Essex Co., VA, Aug. 8, 1856); Maternal grandparents- Jean Pierre de Gouges (officer, French Army) & Mary Hyacinth [surname unknown]; Paternal grandparents- Muscoe Garnett of Essex Co., VA and Grace Fenton Mercer of Stafford Co., VA. Marriage- Louis A. Garnett married his cousin, Maria Champe Garnett, on March 17, 1853. She died in Sept. 1909. They had 3 children- William Hammond, Edgar Malcolm, Porter. VMI record: Entered VMI from Essex Co. on Nov. 13, 1839; graduated July 4, 1842 standing 16th out of 16 graduates. Military record: none; he was studying in Europe during the Civil War. Career: Moved to San Francisco in 1851, where he was lawyer; instrumental in establishing United States Mint; specialist in monetary & currency policy and law. Died June 25, 1901, Pacific Grove, California. Brother of Civil War General Robert S. Garnett.|
