|Biography & Genealogy:||John Henry Lionberger, Class of 1863: Born- March 20, 1843. Matriculated from Luray, Va. At VMI 2 years. Military Record: Entered service at Luray June 1, 1861 (some records say July 27 in Winchester). Served in Capt W.H. Chapman's Company Virginia Light Artillery (Dixie Artillery) July 1861. To 1st Lt, Company D, 7th Virginia Cavalry at unknown date. Detailed fall 1861 to command artillery with forces at Romney (WV). Probably dropped at April 1862 re-organization. On February 28, 1863 enlisted as Private, Company C, 39th Battalion Viginia Cavalry (Maj J.H. Richardson's Battalion of Scouts, Guides, and Couriers). (Some records show enlisted December 15, 1862 at New Market.) Elected 2nd Lt March 9, 1863. On leave fall 1864. 5'9", dark complexion, hazel eyes, black hair. Post War Career: Civil engineer. Died- August 10, 1879 in Warrenton, Va. Buried Green Hill Cemetery, Luray, Va.|
