Biography & Genealogy: | Samuel Hodges, Class of 1863 (non-graduate). Born Norfolk, VA, October 20, 1842. Died Norfolk, May 11, 1912. Parents: Samuel H. Hodges and Emily Nash. He attended VMI for a little more than one year, when he was dismissed for having excessive demerits. Civil War record: Drillmaster in Richmond, Spring 1861; Enlisted 12 Feb. 1862 at Sewell's Point as Private, Company H, 16th Virginia Infantry; this company became Capt. C. R. Grandy's Company of Virginia Light Artillery. Sick November 1862- Jan. 1863. Captured at Petersburg 2 April 1865; Held at Point Lookout prison, Maryland; released on oath 5 June 1865. Postwar- Merchant. Commander of Norfolk Camp, United Confederate Veterans in 1890. Capt. Virginia National Guard, 1875-1891. Married: Minnie Daniel, daughter of Wiley Daniel of Wilson, NC, on Nov. 1, 1877. Issue: 1. Eliza D., married Thomas B. Dornier; 2. Wiley Daniel 3. Emily Nash, married Richard Whaley 4. Samuel Wilber 5. Robert Garnett 6. Minnie Ruth. At the time of his death he was survived by his widow and 6 children; his brother, Col. Harry Hodges; and a sister, Mrs. Emily McMullen. Buried Forest Lawn cemetery. |
