Biography & Genealogy: | Hannah Samuel Baldwin, Class of 1863: Born- October 19, 1843. Matriculated from Coles Ferry, Va. At VMI 2 years (entered as a junior). At Hampden-Sydney College 1859-61. Military Record: Enlisted May 28, 1861 at Hampden-Sydney for 1 year as Private, Company G, 20th Va. Captured July 17, 1861 at Richmond Mountain. Paroled at Beverly. Discharged September 25, 1861. At VMI January 1, 1862-July 3, 1863. As Cadet Captain was Officer of the Day in charge of honor guard May 1863 when body of Lt Gen (formerly Prof) T.J. "Stonewall" Jackson lay in state in his old section room. Enlsited for war in Culpeper August 10, 1863 as Private, Company B, 14th Va Cavalry. Applied for cadetship of lieutenancy December 1, 1863. On detached service much of 1864. To hospital (Petersburg) March 27, 1865. Captured there April 3, 1865. Still in hospital May 25, 1865. Post War Career: First Superintendent of Schools for WV. Teacher; school official; farmer; judge. Died- January 19, 1921 and buried in Pocahontas County, WV. |
