|Biography & Genealogy:||Richard Louis Brown, Jr. Class of 1863. Born- 22 February 1843. Matriculated from Upshur County , WV. At VMI 1 year and 10 months over a 3 year time. Unofficial source says he attended a college in DC (unnamed) prior to entering VMI. Military Record: Drillmaster in Richmond during the spring and summer of 1861. Served with 17th Virginia Cavalry late 1861. Dismissed from VMI 17 March 1862 for neglect of duty. He made Sgt, Company C, 1st Maryland until regiment mustered out August 1862. Joined 62nd Virginia (1st Virginia Rangers). Captured 10 September 1862 in Pocahontas County, WV. He was held in Wheeling, WV and Camp Chase, OH. Exchanged at Vicksburg, MS on 1 November 1862. Meanwhile he was appointed Cadet Reserved Army Confederate States and then Lt, Company K, 17th Virginia Cavalry. Badly wounded in action at Monocacy in the left thigh. He was in the hospital in Charlottesville. He was paroled 24 April 1865 at Winchester as 2nd Lt, Company C, 17th Virginia Cavalry. Post War Career: Farmer, Merchant. Lived in Anne Arundel County and Baltimore, MD. Died- 25 May 1900|
