|Biography & Genealogy:||James Andrew Broome, Class of 1863. Born- 27 November 1839. Matriculated from LaGrange, GA. At VMI 3 years (repeated freshman year) Military Record: Drillmaster in Richmond, spring of 1861. Elected Capt Company D, 14th Alabama and entered state service 26 July 1861; entered Confederate States service 7 August 1861. Made Major on 2 August 1862. Appointed Lt Col on 3 October 1862. Succeeded to command of regiment at Gettysburg and praised for "great gallantry and energy." He was wounded in action (in the left knee and he lost the leg) on 6 May 1864 at the Wilderness. Transferred from the hospital in Charlottesville to LaGrange, GA in August 1864. Retired to Invalid Corps 25 March 1865. Paroled Macon, GA. Post War Career: Farmer, Merchant. He was a methodist. Married to 1) Emma G. Robinson, 2) Mary Ida Cary. Died- 7 May 1917 in LaGrange, GA.|
