Biography & Genealogy:Robert Alexander Boyd, Class of 1863. Genealogy: Born May 2, 1842, Oakley, Mecklenburg Co., Virginia. Parents: Richard Boyd and Lucy Ann Goode. Paternal grandparents: Robert Boyd and Sally Anderson Jones. Maternal grandparents: John Bennett Goode and Pamelia Hendrick. Additional genealogy in our file, available upon request. Education: Attended Randolph Macon College (prior to VMI attendance); Matriculated at VMI on January 9, 1862 and was admitted to the 2nd (Junior) class; graduated July 3, 1863, standing 7 out of 10 graduates. Civil War record: He joined the 1st Regiment of Engineers (Col. T. M. R.Talcott commanding) as the 1st Sergeant of Company D and served until the end of the war. Boyd witnessed the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse, where his unit served as body guards for General Lee. Marriage: To Anna Boisseaux Hatcher on November 15, 1882. Children- 1. Robert Massie Boyd 2. Shelton Goode Boyd 3. Nannie Belle Boyd. Postwar: Farmer in Mecklenburg Co. on his family estate "Egypt." Death: June 24, 1909.

About the Database

The database currently includes the names of all enrolled students (both graduates and non-graduates) from VMI's opening in 1839 through the World War II era. In addition, you will find biographical and genealogical information, including a summary of military service during the Civil War, for many individuals who attended in the 19th century. The database also includes some historical Faculty and Board of Visitors members, as well as U. S. Army students sent to VMI for training during World Wars I and II.
