Biography & Genealogy: | William Archer Blankingship, Class of 1863: Born- July 25, 1842. Matriculated from Finney's Mill, Va. At VMI 2 years. Military Record: Drillmaster in Richmond in Spring of 1861. Wrote Maj. Gen. Polk on July 1861, trying to get service with him. Lt., Co. F, 25th Va., on August 28, 1861. Became Captain in Spring 1862. Wounded in action on July 2, 1863, in Gettysburg, Pa. Captured July 14, 1863, at Williamsport, Md. Lost lower third of right leg. Held at Johnson's Island, Oh. and Point Lookout, Md. Paroled for exchange in April, 1864. In Charlottesville and Richmond hospitals. Retired to Invalid Corps on Dec. 9, 1864. Post War Record: School official. Superintendent of Chesterfield Co., Va. schools. Died- June 8, 1907. |
