|Biography & Genealogy:||Edward Carter, Class of 1864: Born- Aug. 19, 1843 in Glen Welby, Va. Father- Richard Henry Carter; Mother- Mary Welby DeButts. Pat. Grandfather- Edward Carter; Pat. Grandmother- Fanny Scott. Mat. Grandfather- John Henry DeButts; Mat. Grandmother- Sophia Forrest. Married- Jane Peter Turner, daughter of Edward Turner. Children- 1- Sarah Beverly Carter, who married William Alexander Stewart, Jr. on June 14, 1892; 2- Mary DeButts Carter, who married James Robert Foster on Jan. 31, 1894; 3- Nina (Selina) Carter who married a Christian A. Heineken on Jan. 2, 1896; 4- Rebecca W. Carter. Entered VMI Aug. 4, 1860; Resigned May 28, 1861 when he was ordered to Camp Mason; Later made Honorary Graduate of the Class of 1864 (This was common practice for cadets who had dropped out to serve in the War). Civil War Service- Was a Drill Master in Richmond in the Spring of 1861; Enlisted July 21, 1861 as 1st Lieut. of Co.K in the 8th Va. Infantry. Promoted to Captain Dec. 2, 1862; Wounded in action and captured at Gettysburg July 3, 1863 (was on crutches the rest of his life as result of this injury). In summer of 1864 was one of the "Immortal 600" prisoners sent to Hilton Head Island, SC. Paroled a Charleston Harbour, SC Dec. 15, 1864. Post War Career(s)- Merchant, Banker, Deputy Treasurer, Farmer. Died- Oct. 3, 1928 in Warrenton, Va. Buried at Warrenton Cemetery.|
