|Biography & Genealogy:||Meriwether Jones, b. 1920 d. 1944. Killed in action, World War II. Son of Roy Meriwether Jones and Caroline Talbott Armistead, both of Richmond, Virginia. Entered VMI September 1938 and graduated June 1942; at VMI was a member of the Track and Cross Country teams. After leaving VMI commissioned and joined the U.S. Army Air Corps. A B-24 pilot, he was killed in action on April 21, 1944, over Bucharest, Romania, at the conclusion of a bombing run against enemy rail yards. His posthumously awarded Silver Star citation reads, in part, "...his formation was aggressively attacked by 45 enemy fighers. In the ensuing fierce aerial battle, his aircraft was severely damaged...he ordered the crew to leave the plane, while he maintained control...in a gallant effort to affect a safe crash landing...Lieutenant Jones was killed by the force of the crash...." He is buried at Ardennes American Cemetery, Neupre, Belgium, Plot D, Row 11, Grave 45.|
