Biography & Genealogy: | Captain Frank Preston, born September 1, 1841 at Lexington, VA. New Market Staff. Parents: Col. John Thomas Lewis Preston (a VMI founder, Board member, and faculty member) and Sarah Lyle Carruthers. Attended Washington College (Washington & Lee University); lost arm at First Battle of Winchester and resigned his commission; accepted a position as Instructor of English, Latin & Tactics at VMI, where he taught from 1861-1864; in command of Company B at the Battle of New Market; left VMI and studied languages and literature in Berlin; returned to accept the chair of modern languages at the College of William and Mary. Died November 19, 1869, of consumption. Buried Lexington, VA. |
