Biography & Genealogy:Walter Craigmiles, Class of 1874: Genealogy: Born- ca. 1855 in Cleveland, Tenn. Father- Pleasant Miller Craigmiles; Mother- Caroline Vance. Pat. Grandfather- Joseph Craigmiles; Pat. Grandmother- Lucinda Henderson. No information about Mat. Grandparents. Married- Annie Sandrush (or Sandash) of Shelbyville, Tenn. in Oct. 1881. Children- Pleasant M. Craigmiles VMI Record: Entered VMI- Aug. 27, 1870 at age 15; Dropped from rolls Oct. 13, 1871 after failing to return from furlough. After VMI- Attended Washington College (now Washington & Lee University) as a student under Gen. Robert E. Lee; Officially represented the student body as a pallbearer at the funeral of Gen. Lee. Careers- Capitalist; Erected the Craigmiles Opera House; his family was among the wealthiest in Tenn. Died- Oct. 2, 1928 in Chattanooga, Tenn. Buried in Fort Hill Cemetery, Cleveland, Tenn.

The database currently includes the names of all enrolled students (both graduates and non-graduates) from VMI's opening in 1839 through the World War II era. In addition, you will find biographical and genealogical information, including a summary of military service during the Civil War, for many individuals who attended in the 19th century. The database also includes some historical Faculty and Board of Visitors members, as well as U. S. Army students sent to VMI for training during World Wars I and II.
