|Biography & Genealogy:||Henry Alexander Wise, Class of 1862. New Market Staff. Genealogy: Born- May 18, 1842 in Accomac Co. Drummondtown, Va. Father- John Cropper Wise; Mother- Anne Finney. Pat. Grandfather- Maj. John Wise; Pat. Grandmother- Sarah Corbin Cropper. Mat. Grandfather- Col. John Finney; Mat. Grandmother- Margaret Bourman. Never married, no children. VMI Record: Entered VMI- Sept. 2, 1859 as 3rd Classman (Sophomore); He didn't officially graduate until 1865, but stood 9th among 35 graduates of that class and is still considered to be in the Class of 1862. Civil War Record: Drill Master for VMI Corps of Cadets stationed in Richmond in spring of 1861; Appointed 1st Lieut. and Adjutant of the 46th Va. Infantry Aug. 13, 1861; Captured on Roanoke Island Feb. 8, 1862; Paroled Feb. 21, 1862. Lost his position as 1st Lieut. when his regiment re-organized before his exchange; Appointed Lieut. and Asst. Professor of Math and Asst. Instructor of Tactics at VMI in 1862, and as Captain 1863-64; Second in command of the Corps of Cadets during the Battle of New Market and briefly took command when Scott Shipp was wounded in action; Appointed 2nd Lieut. of Capt. J. D. Smith's Co. in the Va. Light Artillery Jan. 13, 1865 and was with artillery at Appomattox. Careers: Teacher; Farmer; School Official; Taught at VMI 1862-64 (see above); moved to Baltimore, Md. in 1870; Appointed Asst. Superintendent of city schools in Md. 1876 and Superintendent in 1883. Died- July 11, 1918 in Norfolk, Va.|
