Attended West Point July 1, 1860- April 22, 1861. Military Record: Lieut. in the Provisional Army of Va. and Drill Master in Richmond, Va. in spring of 1861; on duty in unknown capacity as Lieut. with Brig. Gen. (later Lt. Gen.) Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson in summer of 1861; Claimed to have served in 1st Va. Battalion, but no official record of such service found; appointed Lieut. for Reserve Army of Confederate States Sept. 21, 1861; assigned as Provost Marshall in Lynchburg, then Richmond, Va.; assigned as Commandant of Libby Prison in Richmond, Nov. 1862; made Captain of Provisional Army of Confederate States July 16, 1862; promoted to Major Nov. 23, 1862; made inspection of Andersonville, Ga. prison (Camp Sumter) May 1864; Authorized to raise Negro troops March 15, 1865.
