Biography & Genealogy: | Edmund Kirby, Class of 1862. Born- September 13, 1839. Matriculated from Richmond, Va. At VMI 3 years. Military Record: Drill Master, Richmond spring 1861. Appointed 1st Lt and Adjutant, 58th North Carolina July 29, 1862. Acting as regiment's Lt Col when Killed in Action at Chickamauga. His commander wrote: "With the words, 'Drive them, boys! Drive them!' on his lips he fell, pierced by four balls while nobly leading my right wing...an able officer and one full of promise...by birth and education a soldier--a brave, generous, self-denying soldier." Died- September 20, 1863 at Chickamauga, Ga. |
