|Biography & Genealogy:||Thomas Colston Kinney, Class of 1862 (graduated 28th out of 35). Born- April 27, 1841. Matriculated from Staunton, Va. At VMI 3 years and 1 month. Military Record: Drill Master, Richmond, on Peninsula, and in western Virginia 1861 (last two assignments with artillery). Sent to Braxton County July 1861 by Brig Gen H. A. Wise where he rallied local militia to oppose US force. In January 1862 Wise requested his appointment as 2nd Lt of engineers; so commissioned February 1862. Meanwhile, attached to 59th Virginia as Drill Master. With Wise at Roanoke Island. Detailed to drill artillery. Commanded gun in Ft. Bartow on the island. Captured Febbruary 8, 1862 when island fell. Exchanged August 1862. Assigned to staff of Maj Gen (later Lt Gen) T.J. Jackson and, after his death, to staff of Maj Gen E. Johnston. Died- July 28, 1863 in Staunton of typhoid fever.|
