Biography & Genealogy:Griffith Frederick, Class of 1862: Born- January 29, 1840. Matriculated from The Hague, Va. At VMI 1 year and 2 months (repeated freshman year). Dismissed from VMI (AWOL). Military Record: Enlisted May 25, 1861 at The Hague for 1 year in Company K (originally Company A), 40th Va. Appointed 2nd Lt, 111th Regiment Va Militia June 5, 1861 (DOR May 25). Appointed 2nd Lt, 40th Va July 1, 1861. Extended service for 2 years spring 1862. Resigned August 2, 1862 ("long continued ill health"). Enlisted March 17, 1863 at Layton's as Private, Company C, 9th Va Cavalry. Detailed August 23, 1863 to Signal Corps. Captured near Petersburg September 23 (or 24) 1864. Held at Point Lookout, Md. In October 1864 sent with other POWs to Dutch Gap and put to work under CS fire in retaliation for treatment of US POWs. Exchanged March 19, 1865. Paroled on Northern Neck May 6, 1865. Post War Career: Public official; physician. County treasurer. Represented Westmorland County in Va House of Delegates 1871-75. Died- June 4, 1877 in Westmoreland County; buried in Yeocomico Church there.
