|Biography & Genealogy:||Samuel Downing, Jr. was born on Sep. 28, 1842 in Lancaster, Virginia, the son of Samuel Downing, a lawyer, and Catherine E. Payne. He married Miss Betts of Northumberland County, Virginia, in 1865; they had one son, who died in infancy. Matriculated to VMI from Lancaster, VA. At VMI 2 years after entering as a 3d Classman (sophomore). Military Record: Elected 2d Lieutenant, Company L, 55th Virginia on March 6, 1862; entered service at White Stone on March 25, 1862 for 3 years; Wounded in Action Aug. 29, 1862 at Second Manassas; detached early 1863 as acting brig inspector; Wounded in Action May 2, 1863 at Chancellorsville; promoted to 1st Lieutenant May 3, 1863 (some records show March 9 or May 2); promoted to Captain July 8, 1863; spent October, 1863 in hospital (fever); Wounded in Action (abdomen) again on Nov. 27, 1863 at Mine Run; captured January 13, 1864 in Northumberland County while on medical furlough; held at Hammond General Hospital, DC, and Point Lookout, Maryland; Paroled Mar. 3, 1864; exchanged Mar. 17, 1864; Wounded in Action (left arm) on Aug. 18, 1864 (some records show Aug. 19); in hospital until Sep. 4; paroled in Northumberland County on May 8, 1865. Post War Career: Farmer, tobacco merchant. Died- March 11, 1885 near Baltimore, Maryland (some records indicate year of birth as 1843).|
