Biography & Genealogy: | Josiah Herbert Deans, Class of 1862: Born- Nov. 12, 1842. Matriculated from Gloucester, VA. At VMI 1 year; left due to ill health and dissatisfaction with school. Military Record: Enlisted June 10, 1861 at West Point for 1 year as a Private with Company H, 9th Virginia Cavalry; reenlisted in early 1862; promoted to Corporal on Apr. 7, 1862; absent from duty due to illness from May to June, 1862; ordered to be transferred to Captain J.W. Drewry's Company of Virginia Light Artillery (Captain J.B. Jones' Company; Southside Artillery) in September of 1862, but the order was revoked; no record of service with artillery found, and he was with the 9th Virginia Cavalry well into 1863 when he was Sergeant Major; unofficial source says he later became a Lieutenant and Acting Adjutant. Post War Career: Freight Agent; lived in Alabama. Died- ca. 1881. |
