Married- Roberta Hamilton, daughter of George Hamilton of Culpeper, Va. Married Sept. 23, 1874. Children- 1- John Miller Cunningham, Jr.; 2- George H. Cunningham. VMI Record: Entered VMI- Aug. 26, 1859 as 3rd Classman (Sophomore); Graduated Dec. 6, 1861 standing 33rd in a class of 35. Military Record: Drill Master for Corps of Cadets stationed at Richmond, Va. April- July, 1861; Enlisted Sept. 28, 1861 at Richmond and elected 1st Lieut. of Captain W. J. Dance's Co. Va. Light Artillery (Powhatan Artillery); on sick leave July-Aug. 1862; Detailed May-June 1863 to "go after recruits and absentees"; Commanded his Company at Gettysburg; absent sick with bronchitis May- July 1864; his horse was killed in action Sept. 2, 1864 near Fort Harrison; paroled at Appomatox. Last survivor of the Corps of Cadets who marched from VMI in April 1861 under the command of then Maj. T. J. "Stonewall" Jackson. Also the last surviving antebellum alumnus. Careers: Farmer.
