Married- Louisa Fountaine Washington, daughter of John Augustine Washington of Mount Vernon, Va. (decendant of one of George Washington's brothers) Children- 1- Christine W. Chew Rozsel, who married B.M. Rozsel; 2- Roger Preston Chew, Jr.; 3- Margaret Preston Chew Norris, who married W.O. Norris. VMI Record: Entered VMI- July 30, 1859; Graduated Dec. 6, 1861 with the Class of 1862, standing 8 in a class of 35. Civil War Record: Served as Drill Master for VMI Cadets in Richmond in the Spring of 1861; Acting Lieut. and Adjutant for Captain W.W. Hardwicke's Co. of Va. Light Artillery July 15- Sept. 1861; Elected Captain of his company in the Va. Horse Artillery (Capt. Roger P. Chew's Co.) Aug. 1861; Battery served with the 7th Va. Cavalry and Chew was sometimes listed as Captain in that regiment; Promoted to Major March 14, 1864, then Lt. Col. March 1, 1865; Escaped from Appomattox and joined confederate forces in North Carolina with which he surrendered. Highly praised throughout the war by his superiors, including Col. Stapleton Crutchfield; Lt. Gen. W. Hampton and then Lt. Gen. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. Careers: Real estate agent; Farmer; insurance salesman; public official.
