Biography & Genealogy: | Wooldridge Edwin Spencer, Class of 1861: Born- September 7, 1840. Matriculated from Richmond, Va. At VMI 2 years. Resigned from VMI being "deficient in mathematics and conduct." Military Record: Enlisted March 14, 1862 in Richmond for war in Capt W.W. Parker's Company Va Light Artillery. To 1st Sgt. Graduated from Medical College of Va 1863. Especially praised for conduct at Antietam and Gettysburg. Promoted to 2nd Lt, Company B, 1st Va Battalion August 1863. Unofficial source says served as Adjutant of Battalion as 1st Lt. September-October 1863 roll shows resigned. Returned to Parker's Company. Appointed 1st Lt September 12, 1864 (date of rank September 10) under a law for promotion for valor and skill. Detailed as ordnance officer, Lt Col F. Huger's artillery battalion late 1864. Paroled at Appomattox as commander of Parker's Company. Married Martha Cox Whiting 1864. Post War Career: Physician; merchant. Died- September 28, 1875. Buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond. |
