|Biography & Genealogy:||Williams Richard Latane, Class of 1861 (graduated 2nd out of 17): Born- October 11, 1837. Matriculated from Centre Cross, Va. At VMI 4 years. Military Record: Drill Master, Richmond spring 1861. Unofficial source says appointed 2nd Lt, Provisional Army of Virginia and assigned to recruiting duty at Fredericksburg. On Ocotber 10, 1861 appointed 1st Lt and Adjutant, 55th Va. Wounded in action summer 1862 (probably at Frayer's Farm June 30). Absent sick December 1862. A senior officer present for duty commanded regiment May 3-4, 1863 at Chancellorsville. Credited with capture of US flag July 1, 1863 at Gettysburg. Captured April 6, 1865 at Sayler's Creek. Held at Johnson's Island, Ohio. Released June 20, 1865. Post War Career: Married Florence Broaddus. Teacher; merchant. Died- March 8, 1907 in Baltimore, Md.|
