|Biography & Genealogy:||Tyler James Rochelle, Class of 1861: Born- c1830. Matriculated from Jerusalem, Va. At VMI 2 years (entered as a 5th year freshman). Secured appointment to US Military Academy but seems to never have enrolled there. Military Record: Unofficial source says Lt, Va Militia January 1860; Maj, 65th Va Militia August 1860. Entered service May 7, 1861 as 2nd Lt, Company B, 1st Va Battalion (date of rank May 4). To 1st Lt, Company A December 8, 1862 (date of rank August 29). Wounded in action (right arm) July 21, 1864. In hospital (Richmond, Danville). Returned to duty September 17, 1864. Surrendered at Appomattox. Took oath in Richmond June 17, 1865. Post War Career: Farmer; teacher. Deputy clerk, Southampton Co. Appointed judge 1883. Died- December 3, 1902 in Soldiers' Home, Richmond. Buried family cemetery, Southampton Company. Grandson of US President J. Tyler.|
