|Biography & Genealogy:||Tabb William H., Class of 1861: Born- ? Matriculated from Portsmouth, Va. At VMI 8 1/2 months. Military Record: Dismissed from VMI for neglect of duty. Enlisted April 21, 1861 at Portsmouth for 1 year as Pvt in the "Old Dominion Guards," a company assigned to 3rd Va. Company transferred to 9th Virginia July 1861 as Company K. To Sgt. Unofficial sources say served as Sgt Maj, 3rd Virginia but no official record of such service found. Detailed to work at Gosport Navy Yard (Norfolk) with machinery and ordnance. Unofficial source says organized company of men at the yard as a naval reservist and elected Captain. Norfolk evcacuated May 1862 and he went with company to navy yard at Charlotte, NC. There rest of war. Often called to active duty with company. In 1865 served for President J. Davis and his family on flight from Richmond. Entrusted by Davis with Mrs Davis and daughter. Once carried Mrs Davis across a stream. Post War Career: Machinist; businessman. Died- January 1, 1897.|
