Biography & Genealogy: | Smith William Augustine, Class of 1861 (graduated 11 out of 17). Born- September 17, 1840. Matriculated from Pt Conway, Va. At VMI 3 years. Military Record: Drill Master, Richmond spring 1861. Appointed Lt, Provisional Army Virginia summer 1861 and returned to VMI to train men. By October 1861 Acting Assistant Adjutant General on staff of Col (later Maj Gen) J.G. Walker, commanding Aquia District and then brig. On Walker's staff for most of war. To Capt, Adjutant General Department May 9, 1862 (date of rank April 23). Briefly on staff of Maj Gen J.B. Magruder late 1864-early 1865 in District of Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. Signed parole in Houston, Texas June 21, 1865. Post War Career: Teacher, farmer, manufacturer. Secretary-Treasurer of manufacturing firm in Fredericksburg. Died- March 8, 1905. |
